Personal experience

Dr. Omid Liaghat is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained hand and microsurgery specialist based in Shiraz, Iran. He has extensive experience in the treatment of complex hand and upper-limb injuries, peripheral nerve disorders, tendon injuries, congenital and acquired deformities, and traumatic limb amputations.

He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 1998. He subsequently completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Shafa Yahyaian Hospital, an orthopedic teaching center affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences, and obtained his Iranian Board Certification in Orthopedic Surgery in 2004.

Dr. Liaghat later completed a fellowship in Hand Surgery at Tehran University of Medical Sciences and joined the Iranian Board of Hand Surgeons in 2010. During his advanced training, he also worked for two years as a supervisor in the microsurgery laboratory at Shafa Yahyaian Orthopedic Center, gaining specialized experience in microsurgical reconstruction and limb replantation.

His principal areas of practice include microsurgical repair of the hand and upper extremity, replantation of completely amputated fingers and limbs, peripheral nerve reconstruction, brachial plexus surgery, tendon reconstruction, and free microvascular transfer of soft tissue and bone. He also performs reconstructive procedures for paralyzed hands resulting from stroke, spinal cord injury, and neuromuscular disorders, as well as surgery for congenital and acquired upper-limb deformities.

Dr. Liaghat has developed considerable experience in major upper-extremity replantation. Published professional profiles report hundreds of successful finger replantations and dozens of functional replantations involving completely amputated arms and other major upper-limb segments. Ardِibehesht Hospital also credits him with performing a complete arm replantation in a very young patient and reporting an unusual staged reconstruction in which an amputated hand was temporarily attached to the ankle before being returned to the wrist.

One of his notable scientific contributions is a published case report titled “Ectopic Banking and Implantation of an Amputated Hand.” The report describes an advanced limb-salvage technique in which an amputated hand is temporarily implanted at another anatomical site when immediate replantation is not possible, allowing later reconstruction and reattachment. The study was published in the Indian Journal of Orthopaedics in 2020.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Liaghat has contributed to scientific research in hand surgery and reconstructive orthopedics. His published work includes research on amputated-hand preservation and replantation and the surgical reconstruction of rare bone lesions affecting the hand.
